Introduction

RetroFTP ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard information when you use our FTP/FTPS client app for iOS.

RetroFTP is designed with privacy as a core principle. Your files, connection details, bookmarks, and transfer history stay on your device. Saved passwords are protected in the iOS Keychain. We collect anonymous usage analytics via TelemetryDeck to improve the app — this data cannot identify you.

Information We Collect

Connection Information

When you connect to an FTP or implicit FTPS server:

Non-secret profile details such as the server address, port, protocol, username, and bookmark name are stored locally using Apple's SwiftData framework
Passwords for saved connection profiles are stored separately in the iOS Keychain, encrypted and protected by iOS
Connection credentials are never transmitted to our servers — they are sent only to the FTP or FTPS server you choose to connect to
FTP and FTPS connections are made directly from your device to the server on your local network

Transfer History

RetroFTP maintains a local history of file transfers:

File names, paths, sizes, and transfer status are recorded locally on your device
Transfer history is stored using Apple's SwiftData framework
You can clear your transfer history at any time from within the app
Transfer history is automatically deleted when you uninstall the app

Downloaded Files

Files you download from FTP or FTPS servers are saved to the app's local Documents directory on your device:

Downloaded files remain entirely on your device
Files are organized by connection host for easy browsing
You can delete downloaded files at any time from within the app
We do not access, scan, or transmit the contents of your files

Favorite Paths

You can save favorite remote directory paths for quick navigation:

Favorite paths are stored locally on your device using SwiftData
This data is never transmitted to any external server

Purchase Information

RetroFTP offers a one-time Pro upgrade purchase:

Apple handles all payment processing through the App Store
We receive confirmation of purchase status from Apple via StoreKit 2
We do not have access to your payment details or Apple ID
Purchase status is verified on-device through Apple's transaction APIs — no external server is involved

Analytics

We use TelemetryDeck to collect anonymous usage analytics:

General app usage patterns to understand which features are used
Crash and error frequency to improve stability

TelemetryDeck is a privacy-focused analytics service that:

Anonymizes signals before storage and does not include personal identifiers
Uses anonymous signals that cannot identify individual users or track them across apps

Advertising

RetroFTP displays advertisements to free-tier users via Google AdMob:

Ads are shown only to users who have not purchased Pro; Pro users do not see ads
Ads are served by Google AdMob, a third-party advertising platform operated by Google
AdMob may collect device identifiers (including the advertising identifier if you allow tracking), coarse location derived from IP address, advertising and product-interaction data, and non-user-related crash logs and app performance data
Where required, Google's User Messaging Platform asks for consent before any ad is requested; you can revisit your choices in Settings > About > Ad Privacy Options
Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt controls whether ads can be personalized using your device identifier

Local Network Access

RetroFTP requires local network permission to connect to FTP or FTPS servers on your Wi-Fi network:

Network access is used solely to establish FTP connections to servers you specify
We do not scan your network, discover devices automatically, or collect information about other devices on your network
You can revoke local network permission at any time in your device settings

Information We Do NOT Collect

We do not operate servers that collect or store your files, credentials, transfer history, contacts, photos, browsing history, or health data. TelemetryDeck and Google AdMob handle the limited analytics and advertising data described above.

How We Use Your Information

To connect to FTP or FTPS servers on your local network at your direction
To transfer files between your device and FTP or FTPS servers
To save your connection bookmarks and favorite paths for convenience
To maintain a transfer history so you can review past activity
To verify your Pro purchase status so you can access premium features
To understand anonymous usage patterns and improve the app (via TelemetryDeck)
To display advertisements to free-tier users (via Google AdMob)

Data Storage

Local Storage (SwiftData, UserDefaults & iOS Keychain)

Non-secret connection profile details, favorite paths, transfer history, and app settings are stored locally on your device using SwiftData or UserDefaults
Passwords for saved connection profiles are stored separately in the iOS Keychain
Downloaded files are stored in the app's Documents directory
Deleting a saved connection profile also removes its password from the Keychain
Protected by your device's built-in security features (passcode, Face ID, Touch ID)

We do not operate our own servers. All data storage uses Apple's on-device infrastructure. We have no ability to access your data remotely.

FTP Protocol & Security

RetroFTP supports plain FTP and implicit FTPS/TLS for server connections:

Plain FTP (port 21 by default) is unencrypted — data transferred between your device and the server, including credentials, is not encrypted in transit
Implicit FTPS (port 990 by default) uses TLS from the start of the connection to encrypt both control and data channels
Use plain FTP only on trusted local networks, or choose implicit FTPS when the server supports it
RetroFTP does not currently support SFTP or explicit FTPS (AUTH TLS)

Share Extension

RetroFTP includes a share extension that lets you send files from other apps:

Files shared to RetroFTP are temporarily staged in a secure App Group container on your device
Staged files remain on your device until you choose a destination and upload them
No file data is transmitted to any server other than the FTP or FTPS server you select

Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

We may share information only in the following circumstances:

With Apple, as required for App Store purchase verification via StoreKit 2
With TelemetryDeck, for anonymized usage analytics that contain no personal identifiers
With Google AdMob, for serving advertisements to free-tier users (the advertising data described above may be shared; see Google's Privacy Policy)
If required by law or valid legal process

Data Security

Non-secret connection profile details, bookmarks, history, settings, and files are stored entirely on your device
Passwords for saved connection profiles are stored separately in the iOS Keychain
Purchase status is verified on-device via Apple's StoreKit 2
We do not operate servers that store your data
App data is protected by your device's security features
Analytics data sent to TelemetryDeck is anonymous and cannot identify you

Children's Privacy

RetroFTP is a general-purpose file transfer utility rated 4+. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Ads are served as non-personalized where consent has not been given.

Data Retention

Connection profiles: Non-secret profile details are stored locally until you delete them or uninstall the app
Saved passwords: Stored in the iOS Keychain and removed when you delete the corresponding connection profile
Transfer history: Stored locally until you clear it or uninstall the app
Downloaded files: Stored locally until you delete them or uninstall the app
Favorite paths: Stored locally until you delete them or uninstall the app
Purchase status: Managed by Apple's StoreKit, tied to your Apple ID
Analytics data: Anonymous signals sent to TelemetryDeck; cannot be linked to you

Uninstalling RetroFTP deletes the app's local profiles, history, downloaded files, favorites, and settings. Purchase status is managed by Apple and persists across installs.

Your Rights

Access your data stored in the app (visible in Settings and History)
Delete local app data by uninstalling the app
Clear transfer history and bookmarks from within the app
Revoke local network permission at any time in device settings
Opt out of ad tracking via the ATT prompt or in device settings

California Residents (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):

Right to know what personal information we collect
Right to delete your personal information
Right to opt-out of the sale of personal information
Right to non-discrimination for exercising your rights

We do not sell personal information. Because all personal data is stored locally on your device and is never transmitted to us, you maintain full control over your information at all times.

European Users (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):

Right to access your personal data
Right to rectification of inaccurate data
Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten")
Right to restrict processing
Right to data portability
Right to object to processing

Our legal basis for processing is your consent (for local network access and ad tracking) and legitimate interests (for providing core file transfer functionality and anonymous analytics). Because all personal data remains on your device, you can exercise these rights by managing app permissions or uninstalling the app.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy.
